After 5 months in the making, Jyc Row is proud to present his debut EP – Alicornae. Based around the 4 princesses of Equestria, something something potential spoilers, this EP explores each of these characters one by one, with a finale to wrap it up in a neat little bow at the end. Let’s get into it shall we? Full writeup after the break…
Track 1 – Magia Twilight
Starting off this 5-track EP is Magia Twilight. Strong war drums drive this track, whilst horns and a choir fill in the background, and bagpipies take the lead role, and boy do I love me some bagpipes! ♥
Track 2 – In Nomine Celestia
Starting off with a gentler vibe is In Nomine Celestia, but it picks up again quickly, again with a drum troupe bringing the force behind this song. More pipes and fiddles add a melody and it even includes a key change…what? All the best songs have key changes!
Track 3 – Magna Luna
Magna Luna feels somewhat like a lament. Slower than the previous two tracks, it builds up slowly to a climax, and ends by suddenly dropping almost anything and slowing down to a halt…perhaps representative of Luna’s rise to Nightmare Moon…and the demise that followed that short-lived moment.
Track 4 – Ave Cadenza
A song for the Princess of Love, now with more celtic vibes, although this album sure does feature those bagpipes pretty strongly. But I digress; Ave Cadenza is definitely the softest track on the album, appropriate for the character after whom it is named,
Track 5 – Alicornae
With an almost industrial feel to it, Alicornae, the final song and title track of this EP has a very epic feel to it. With some electronic drums driving the majority of the song, you’d be forgiven for expecting it to switch up into dubstep, or perhaps feature a symphonic metal breakdown. I’m going off-topic again; this track is an energetic end to a varied EP of orchestral music.
Releasing a debut EP is always a big step to take as a musician in this fandom. It gets several of your tracks out to the public at once and serves as an opportunity to really widen your audience. I really hope Jyc Row gets a bunch more recognition from this because he sure deserves it! I’m not the biggest fan of orchestral music, but I enjoyed every single track of this EP. If you wish to support Jyc Row financially, you can purchase the EP from his Bandcamp, or if you’re unable to do so but still want to show some love, individual track downloads are available on his SoundCloud too. Bravo, Jyc Row, quel bon travail!
