Continuing the accidental Luna theme we’ve had going on here for the past few hours, we present Nicolas Dominique’s remastered version of his mini-album Power of the Night. Get the full review after the break!
The album starts off with a beatless, chillout/ambient piece. Awakening the Ancient Power begins with a soft pad, and slowly brings in electronic plucks with strings and other orchestral elements. A short but sweet introduction.
We jump right into the beat on Watch the Constellations Dance, the second track, and we’re back in the game with Nicolas’ signature trance sounds. It’s nice and upbeat, and the driving synths and bass add a certain energy to this.
Comet is a touch slower, and feels somewhat reminiscent of 80s soundtracks…not quite to the same extent as synthwave but in a similar field. Also like 80s soundtracks, I can imagine driving whilst listening to this, in a city late at night or something.
Track 4, Moonfire, brings the tempo back up again for an uplifting trance feel. The classic sequenced arpeggiated bass that is so key to uplifting trance keeps this song pumping. Nicolas’ superb skill with calm pads brings the track down to a calm bridge with pretty arps and then builds back into the entrancing beat again.
The start of Crown of Stars has a really eerie vibe to it, feels like it would suit a desolate location in Half-Life 2. The beat then comes is, with a similar vibe to Comet – the 80s reminiscence.
The album closer, Lunar Moonboom, has a similar beat pattern to Crown of Stars. However, it’s notably faster paced and has a slightly heavier feel to it, similar to some breakbeat songs.
All in all, this album is full of Nicolas Dominique’s well-known chill / trance style. While it might have been nicer to hear a bit more variety, I’ll bear in mind this was originally released 3 years ago – and the new mixing and mastering on this version definitely enhances the listening experience. Keep up the good work Nicolas!
