We had another EP from DJT on the site here a few months ago – it was one of the first things we ever posted. Now we’re very happy to feature his latest EP, Basking in the Earthlight too! You can read the full writeup after the break.
The first song was released a while back, and served as a teaser for the EP. Aurora is a strong, melodic drum & bass track, and it gives me nostalgic feels from the season 1 voice clips. A bold start to the EP, it starts as it means to go on.
If you downloaded Ponies At Dawn: Awakening, you may already know this track. Also featured at the second track on that album, Horse Code is a solid Glitch-Hop song. DJT’s melodies shine through the mix, whilst a strong bass does a lot of the heavy lifting in the low end. Top notch tune 👌
Now time for some dubstep! Jokes on You is a sonically well designed track where DJT gets to show off again both his abilities at making great melodies and heavy sounds. Adding in some future-esque sounds and Pinkie Pie (among other pony) samples gives this track a few little quirks to brighten up the mood too.
A change of pace in the playlist as DJT plays a small piano piece to serve as an interlude. To The Tower starts off solo on piano and then introduces a cello. I’ve said before that piano and strings are one of my favourite combinations – it’s simple enough that you can focus on the individual elements but still each instrument still carries enough complexity to give meaning and depth to this song.
Picking the pace back up is another song we saw featured as a Cider Party exclusive recently. An upbeat and happy house song that features some fantastic vocal chopping, this song caught my attention when I heard it. House and vocal splices are good stuff in my books!
Getting back on that Glitch-Hop vibe is Break It, about which my only complaint is the use of FL Slayer (sry DJT bby, don’t take it personally). Significantly less melody-focused than the rest of the album, it still brings a heavy beat to the table, so it’s good in my books!
Bringing the vibes back down to a chill feel for the end of the album is Purple Dragons, a VIP of DJT’s song Bliss. Except this one features guest rap vocals from N. Hollow, a Singaporean rapper who’s been making his way up slowly in circles both inside and outside the fandom. A nice, relaxing way to end the album.
To sum up, Basking in the Earthlight is a compilation of everything I’ve come to love about DJT’s music: strong melodies, great sound design and solid mixing to the point that these songs have a professional quality to them. The interlude in the middle gave me something nice and different to enjoy as well, it is nice to see artists branch out sometimes into other genres. And as he continues to produce more and more music, it looks like we can expect more music to come in the future, keep up the fantastic work DJT!
