Quicksilver – Six and One | Album | Rock

Known for his hard-rock tracks and as one half of the ska-punk project Luna Ticks, Quicksilver is one of the best up-and-coming rock musicians in the fandom right now, and he’s just released his debut album, Six and One! And following a common theme among collections of songs you find in this fandom, it’s based on the Mane 6 and Spike. Catch the full writeup after the break.

The album starts off with an song about Spike called Sidekick –  the “One” of Six and One. This fast-paced punk song recounts Spike’s lament for being left out, like how we see in Power Ponies, and his drive to be more than just the seventh wheel.

We saw Blur a few days ago, a song that follows Quicksilver’s signature ska-punk style, with an almost-4-chord progression and stabbing horns. The swiftly sung lyrics make this perfect for a mare who lives life in the fast lane.

A noticeably calmer start than the previous two songs, Cliché (the linguist in me is happy that it’s spelled with the accent) is sung from Rarity’s perspective in her seeming endless struggle up the ladder of the world of fashion. It’s the classic story of true art vs. profitable markets, it sounds so cliché but it’s true.

We also saw I Can Relate recently, in part as a celebration of Quicksilver reaching 500 subscribers. A hard rock song for the toughest mare in Ponyville (although I still think she looks adorable when angry in the above video), this is probably the heaviest track on the album.

Another calmer song intro, with Quisksilver adding his chiptune sounds that you hear every now and again in his music. Bookworm (as you can probably guess) is a song about Twilight and her undying love of stories and how they’re told.

Time to PARTY HARD! Bringing the tempo back up for a song about Pinkie. Nosebleed is an anthem simply about partying and Pinkie’s contagious happiness and laughter, which will get anyone in the mood for a good party.

There’s only one character left, and so the album closer is a song about Fluttershy. Butterfly seems to be based in part on the events of the episode Filli Vanilli, and Flutters’ escapades in the world of stage performances.

A seven-track album full of fast-paced, high-energy rock tracks, Six and One is definitely top-tier stuff and some of Quicksilver’s best solo work to date. His production quality is constantly improving and this album shows that he’s got his sound nailed down perfectly. It may not be the most commonly asked question, but if someone ever asks you what happened to the brony rock scene, direct them towards this album and say “it got awesome”.

Six and One is available to purchase on Bandcamp, as well as a deluxe version which features all the instrumentals to the songs.
