Direct Current – Migration EP | Electronic

I do find it rather impressive how Direct Current is able to put out an actual themed EP every couple of months or so. His latest one, Migration, puts the focus on pegasi, which I suppose look like swans when standing in water, so album art kinda fits…right? Regardless, full writeup after the beak break as per usual.

NB: The songs in this YouTube playlist are in reverse order to the album track listing.

The first two tracks we’ve already seen posted on this site. Calms Winds opens the EP with a downtempo beat and soft sounds to match the video’s artwork of sunset in Cloudsdale. Nimbostratus keeps things ambient without any kind of beat but some lovely plucked leads, with an certain tone to it that reminds me of some of SoaringFlight’s material (perhaps simply because of the theme).

Stormwalker probably speaks for itself, with an image of Rainbow Dash used in the video. Master of the skies and now the ponification of Thor ⚡. Although Underocean may seem to deviate from the peagsi theme, its inspiration apparently comes from imagining “pegasi swimming underwater, using their wings”. The intro builds up soft sounds and a very subtle tempo change keep this song constantly in variation.

The next track then was simply a song made especially for Sunset Shimmer day a couple of weeks ago. Red Sky at Night is in DC’s own words “not exactly a pegasi song” but it fits sonically with the rest of the album and is so aurally appealing anyway. And finally, Flock takes us back to the episode Hurricane Fluttershy in both the video art and its meaning. Symbolising pegasi coming together as one to fly together, many different instruments and elements come together to form this relaxing piece that finishes off the EP.

Direct Current’s Migration EP is available to purchase on Bandcamp, and all the songs from it are available to listen to on his YouTube channel.
