Essential Brony Musicians 04: ismBoF

ismBoF (I never understood why his profile pic is green Tom)

Introduction: Hey fellow pony music fans, my name is DuxTape and I hope to be writing articles about pony music from time to time. Essential Brony Musicians was a series I had started on Daily Dose Of Pony, and will be continuing here on Horse Music Herald. If you are interested in more, check out my previous articles covering WoodLore, Evening Star / Marcus Warner, and Tarby.

Today I’m highlighting ismBoF, also known as ISMBOFepicly, or more recently as BoffleFloffe. The name “ismBoF” being a parody of the band I Set My Friends On Fire, but with “bronies” instead. Though he never performed at any conventions, he produced more than his share of music, so let’s dive in!

BlueBrony & MathematicPony – Pony Therapy | Musical

Pony therapy is a fantastic stage musical style work by the collaboration of BlueBrony and Mathematic Pony. This number is extremely fun and a great break from the woes of this weary time, with its wonderful barbershop-quartet like tune about “just one thing” which everypony needs: “It’s pony Ther-a-py!”

Anamore & Flitterkriz – Keeper of Tales (Rockhoof Song) | Epic Orchestal

This duo of talented musicians brings to the table a beautifully crafted track about one of the strongest ponies in Equestria: Rockhoof. The song explores, as described by Anamore, “the struggle to adapt in the modern world after spending 1000 years in the limbo.” It feels like a sequel to her previous track “Turn Me to Stone”, delving once more into themes of misplacement and doubt in today’s world. With a stellar performance from the talented Flitterkriz, the song’s lyrics are filled with a longing melancholy that hits on such a deep emotional level it’s hard to put into words, but unmistakably felt in every note of the lullaby-like melody that forms the track’s foundation. The contrast between the verses, which slowly build in intensity throughout the song, and the larger-than-life orchestral choruses is just masterful. It’s the kind of progression that knocks you off your seat if you let it. But what I love the most about this piece is its final verse, overflowing with hope and acceptance. It really lights a path toward a brighter horizon for anyone who might see themselves in Rockhoof’s story on this song.

MC-Arch & Vylet Pony – Butterfly Effect (ft. Namii & SnugBugVA) | Drill/Hip-Hop

What do you get when one of the fandom’s most talented producers collaborates with one of the fandom’s most talented rappers? If you picked an epic song, you’d be right! Vylet’s synth choices layered with piano, strike an emotional chord and give the track an Undertale-like feel. This fits in perfectly with MC-Arch’s lyrics about refusing to be a perpetrator or a bystander and instead continuing to fight for his dreams. His delivery is outstanding per usual, resulting in a powerful but incredibly heartfelt track.

Wooden Toaster – RAINBOW FACTORY (GNG REMIX) | Brazilian Funk/Phonk

GNG’s remix of the fandom classic “Rainbow Factory” by Wooden Toaster takes all the electrifying energy of the original and funnels into an equally potent banger which sounds like it came straight off the floor of the factory itself! The kick is unbelievably powerful, its percussive elements sound like hacking saws, and its synths sound like alarms going off, giving this quite the industrial vibe. It’s an absolutely great listen for anyone wanting a piece which packs an extra punch.

Vale & FL0 | avast_wholesome_peach.mp3 | Dubstep

It maybe April Fools, but this song is no joke, just 100% fun internet vibes. Vale & FL0 have made a remix of a remix, paying homage to both the original Kitsune^2 track as well as Wooden toaster’s rendition. Expect your Fluttershy “yay” chops but infused with dubstep wubs, and then toss those expectations out the window when the piano solo hits. Perhaps a second meme song might even sneak in. Either way, it’ll be hard to get through this one without breaking out smiling.

Ice Angel, Zythiria and Skyshard invite you to a relaxing and soothing timeout from your sorrows with “A Long Journey”. The three form a lovely ambient soundscape with the noises of birds and streams woven between the serene music, slowly building up the instrumentation while never loosing the calm foundation the song was created upon. This arrangement cocoons you in a wonderful way such that the 4 minutes the track asks of you passes in an instance.

BGM & Vul – Party of One | Rock

Party of One is a sock-hoppy party song about Pinkie Pie’s isolation, ironically produced as a team effort between Vul and BGM. This fun song hearkens back to an episode of the same name (S1:E25) in which Pinkie finds herself parting with a roomful of inanimate objects as she feels her friends have all rejected her. This song does a great job of capturing the energy of that particular party, which was simultaneously frantically tragic and hilarious, and only by listening to the lyrics does one realize how truly sad the situation is. The track is a truly exciting piece and is worth the listen.
