Never forget who your friends are. My Friends is an emotional piece from Raven Horn, showcasing some glitzy and melancholy synths set to clips of Twilight from the show talking about her friends and listing them off. The instrumentation is slow and chilled out, having a nostalgic and longing feeling to it while the minimal drum sounds keep the beat strong. A small glimpse into the mind of Twilight Sparkle many years later!
Electronic
MC-Arch – Oathkeeper | Hip-hop
Arch has returned with a teaser for his upcoming album, You Got Me, I Got Us 2 – Our Brave New World! Oathkeeper is a powerful track dedicated to the fandom, much like Solidarity and the recently released Life Outside. Arch delivers lyrical themes about sticking together and helping one another through struggle with conviction and passion – which is something he’s always excelled at – while backed by an electronic beat with soft and heavy dynamics that eventually builds up to some typical yet strong dubstep wubs in between his verses. Be on the lookout for YGMIGU2!
Captive Unicorns – Moonsnow | Indie Pop
The fact that that Captive Unicorns, the artist formerly known as SoGreatandPowerful has released another song this year shows that Scrimshawl wasn’t just a one-off release, and that he’s really back! Moonsnow is an atmospheric ambient pop track that feels like a relaxing journey across a night sky lit by stars, represented perfectly by Captive’s voice and those glitzy synth sounds joined by minimal percussion! On another note, all of his songs this year have been uploaded just about on the 10th. Is this an intentional pattern of releases? Guess we’ll have to find out!
Note: Since the original video got deleted, you may find the MP3 file of the song here.
Vylet Pony – Ursa Major (feat. Just Fern) | Indie Pop
Vylet returns with track 3 from Queen of Misfits, Ursa Major! Joining her is regular collaborator Namii, along with Just Fern, a musician based in Pittsburgh who was also producing fandom music once upon a time. Ursa Major is a fantabulous pop tune with beautiful synths, drums and vocals. Fern’s deeper vocals make for a nice contrast against Vylet’s smoother voice, but the two work together really well! The synth lead is masterfully crafted, especially as it speeds up towards the end of every fourth bar. Check out that outro, though!
DAϟH – Blood Moon in the Everfree | Gabber
“So mysterious” perfectly embodies the spirit of this half-ambient gabber tune by DAϟH. Taken straight off of DAϟH and Payyn’s new album Equestrian Terror: An Introduction, Blood Moon in the Everfree includes a ravenous beat composed of highly industrial drums and a woodwind sample, along with an ocean of ominous effects. DAϟH ends this manic piece by aptly pulling out all stops. DAϟH and Payyn’s album Equestrian Terror also includes songs like Deadline Darling, Dream Demon, and the title track Equestrian Terror.
Thorinair – A Recurring Nightmare | Ambient/Soundtrack
After 2 years of no new music, Thorinair has returned! Again! A Recurring Nightmare is an atmospheric ambient track with brooding synths and string sounds, painting an image of a dark place. The dark ambient elements are a welcome fit, giving a sense of dread. Welcome back to the grind, Thor! This would be a perfect fit in a horror game soundtrack.
SCRATON – Cyberpink (Laughter) | Complextro
There’s nothing getting in SCRATON’s way. Cyberpink is a bouncy electronic track that prominently features vocal samples edited to sound like Pinkie Pie’s the guest singer here! The voice as well as the other stray samples really compliment the track’s complextro roots, with the core track having a pop structure before eventually building up to a synth breakdown filled with vocal chops and even a powerful sample. Wonder if we’ll be seeing the rest of the elements represented through SCRATON’s signature style?
Remember Falling – Strangers (feat. BearSlayer & Cerridwen) | Alternate Electronic
Remember Falling returns with another song from the upcoming Dawn Into Dusk. Starting off with a brief voice exchange between BearSlayer and Cerridwen, we’re thrust into a midtempo electro piece full of shining synths with a positive vibe, yet RF’s vocals and lyrics ponder whether Hollow and Infinity are safe in their new land, and if they’re seen as outsiders and strangers. The vocal duet in the chorus works so well with RF’s typical style of electronic.
Kryptage – Ballad of the Brony VIP | Breakbeat
After a couple years’ hiatus, Kryptage has returned with a VIP version of 2012’s Ballad of the Brony! With a new coat of paint, the instruments have been remastered to sound better than ever, even trading the original’s vocal chops for samples of Saberspark talking about the fandom and the impact it’s had. With more and more names returning, it’s clear the fandom’s not going anywhere anytime soon!
DAϟH – Dream Demon | Gabber
Don’t go to bed… Track 5 from Equestrian Terror: An Introduction is Dream Demon, a heavy-hitting gabber track based around Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?. Samples from the episode are dotted all over, with the fast-paced drums and heavily distorted bass giving an overwhelming feeling of dread, as if the Tantabus is planning to do exactly that; overwhelm the population with horror. Scary stuff!
