Ponysphere – Desperate Housewife (feat. Secret Metal) | Heavy Metal

NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 17 December 2016.

Man, some of these metal artists like to push the envelope a little with what they write their songs about, but if you’re okay with highly suggestive lyricism, then the production on show here is highly worth listening to. Ponysphere and Secret Metal are two of the best metal musicians in the fandom, and showcase this hear with some awesome heavy guitar riffs and aggressive vocals, all mixed pretty cleanly.

Superturtle – Light Of Your Cutie Mark (covering Daniel Ingram) | Indie Rock

NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 14 December 2016.

This is another new track released from the ‘A Little Bit For Charity’ project, and it’s always awesome to hear the unique ways that the professional indie artists enlisted by the project manage to turn the show songs into a style of their own. This time around a group called Superturtle have given their take on the song Light Of Your Cutie Mark. Make sure to check it out below if indie style rock beats are your thing! This one definitely has a bit more of an old school vibe to it.

Francis Vace – Everfree EP | Rock

Not for the first time, Francis Vace has made a nice little EP of cover songs, in a variety of his favourite styles. Last year he performed his favourites from the 3rd Equestria Girls movie, and now he’s taken on the 4th – Legend of Everfree. 4 songs from the film ranging in genre from punk to reggae, and of course with a bit of his signature ska sound twisted in here and there. If you’re a fan of his original work, you’re sure to enjoy his take on these songs too. And best of all, you can download it entirely for free from his bandcamp page!

PrinceWhateverer – Away From Me (ft. NRGPony) | Metal

NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 9 December 2016.

Another new track from Prince’s recent album Reinvent, this piece features all the trademarks of a great PW track – with strong clean vocals from the man himself, excellent production, a neat typography video and some really cool growling vocals from NRGpony. Make sure to check it out below!

Reverbrony – Falling Upwards | Progressive Rock

While it still keeps that progressive element (no, not that Progressive Element) found in his songs, Reverbrony’s latest track takes a somewhat lighter approach to its soundscape. Less chunky guitar, more melodically diverse bass lines. Whether or not you prefer it to his heavier work, it’s always great to see some diversity and hear a bit of experimentation!

Soul Strings – Life In Our Town (covering Rossiboys) | Metal

I remember when the original version of this came out around a year ago or so. Now Soul Strings has taken Rossiboys’ original and turned it from an indie/alt rock anthem into a heavier metal-sounding track, with great results! All picked up by ear, and the solo has even been modified to fit the heavier feel of this version.

Frozen Night – Chrysalis Metamorphosis | Orchestral Metal

NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 30 November 2016.

I have just been loving Frozen Night’s releases recently. It feels like they’ve crossed that precipice into producing consistently high quality works. This one is no different, an 8 minute orchestral metal epic about Queen Chrysalis. It slides between heavy, powerful metal sections and more serene, light, almost ambient sections as well. The build in power around 4 minutes in is especially enjoyable to listen to. Definitely an awesome piece of work from Frozen, and well worth a listen.

Elias Frost (ft. KaMmEr JaEgEr & Ice Gaze) – Bats (covering Daniel Ingram) | Metal

NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 28 November 2016.

Elias Frost has teamed up with a couple of other artists to finish up his month of German-language show song covers in a big way! Probably one of the coolest interpretations of this track, the use of different language vocals help this one stick out a lot. The vocals from Ice Gaze are sung in English however, which means there’s a bit of both in this track! The instrumental is pretty solid too, and a lot heavier than some of the other recent stuff Elias has done.

End of the month – time for another hotspot episode. Apologies it’s been uploaded a little later than normal this month, but now it’s available on YouTube, SoundCloud, and our podcast feed.

Another month draws to a close, and so it’s time for another episode of the Horse Music Hotspot. Despite and ongoing overwhelming presence of electronica, this month saw a great deal of rock and acoustic music, so there’s something for everyone in this month’s episode.

To listen in live, tune in to Ponyville FM at 10PM Eastern on the last Sunday of each month!

Tracklist and embeds available after the break.
