And now for something a little different from ModernBard’s usual style of music – he’s moved away from electronic into the realm of orchestral and done a great job of it too. Short but sweet, this piece captures the majesty of flying and of soaring high in the sky.
Orchestral
[P@D] Radiarc – Bury Me | Orchestral
NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 8 March 2018.
Radiarc’s dark orchestral works continue with this thoroughly captivating piece that carries some heavy weight to it. The track is about Twilight’s struggle with her own immortality, and the effect that the mortality of her friends has on both her and them. There’s some lovely use of guitar and percussion alongside excellent vocal choir sounds and it’s definitely a piece worth listening to.
[P@D] Frozen Night – Dragonfire | Epic Orchestral
NB: This was originally posted on Equestria Daily on 7 March 2018.
Frozen Night’s orchestral works are easily some of my favourite in the fandom, and I especially enjoy it when he branches out into interesting directions with it. That’s exactly what’s been done here, with some lovely use of eastern-influenced sounds to create a bit of a different atmosphere to his usual works. The second half of the track is a little more conventional, but is suitably epic as it rises to a fantastic crescendo.
[P@D] Jyc Row & Felicia Farerre – Night Queen | Epic Orchestral
It wouldn’t be a Ponies At Dawn album if Jyc Row didn’t shoot for the stars and blow everyone away in the process. Acting as a counterpart to their previous collab, Sun of the Night, this song explores the worshippers of Nightmare Moon in the alternate universe the songs are set in. Jyc’s orchestration and Felicia’s performance are both simply incredible, I don’t know what else to say about it!
Get this song and a bunch of other pretty awesome tracks on Ponies At Dawn – Rebirth.
Lukas Vokrinek – A Battle in Time | Orchestral
An epic composition done by Lukas Vokrinek! Written about the “fight” between Starlight and Twilight, this piece has a great production value! I love how all the instruments were performed, we even can hear a guitar riff in the song that reminds me a bit of shoegazing style music! Keep up the good work Lukas!
Sonic.z.Hooves – Reflection of Night | Piano Solo
Fresh off of his Nocturnal Harmonies album which is dedicated to helping raise funds for The Seapony Orchestra, Sonic.z.Hooves brings us this brilliant piano composition. With melodies reflecting the mystery and allure of the stars in the night, Reflection of Night creates the sensation of vastness of the galaxies that appear so vividly in the progression of the track. Beautiful, moving, and exciting all at once, be sure to check out this song and the new album as well!
4everfreebrony – Lilyana’s Theme (Starved For Light: Original Soundtrack) | Orchestral
Written for the upcoming indie, platforming-adventure video game “Starved for Light”, 4everfreebrony give us this bright, flowing track as a musical descriptor to Lilyana, the brave and loving older sister to young Iris. Lilyana’s Theme utilizes brilliant piano chords with flutes to set the lighter tone of the protecting protagonist while strings come in with a moving, adventurous feel to set the scene for action. Expertly put together and thematically excellent, 4everfreebrony gives us plenty of reason to be excited for the development of this project!
Rarity Advocate – 7 Vignettes | Piano Sonata
As a piece of fine piano composition, Rarity Advocate gives us this great piece written in seven parts – one for each of the Mane 6 plus Starlight. Each movement is unique in style and reflects well with its attributed pony, while the sonata as a whole fits well together through its use of dissonant tones. Varying tempos and levels of brightness keep the composition interesting and help make 7 Vignettes a truly original track.
Zephysonas – Lunar Knights | Orchestral
One of the best things about music is the infinite creative possibilities that exist for songwriters, and Zephysonas really demonstrates ingenuity with this track. In order to give this orchestral piece elements of dubstep fusion, Zephy deconstructed the wubs from basic synths in lieu of using mainstream methods. Another beautifully executed technique on display is the use of builds through use of full orchestral instruments instead of standard electronic means, fulfilling a dubstep template almost solely with orchestral components. Lunar Knights has a fulfilling, epic sound throughout, and stands as testament to great songwriting means and execution!
Zizkil – Egotistical Heart | Fidget House
Trixie is a very complex pony in terms of personality, she have a lot of egocentric actions during the episodes that she appears, with a mix of arrogance and craziness. But we’ve need to give the points to her change in heart like Zizkil says in this beautiful track description on YouTube. It starts with an amazing orchestral, mixed with some glitch elements. That suddenly changes to the best Future Bass drop that you will ever hear, a mechanical and uplifting drop that will make you dance for sure! Then the Fidget House part, delicious and mechanical, keeps me reminding me that day I was listening to Mr. Oizo’s All Wet for the hundredth time! The piano, the violins, the synth work, the drum work. Everything! Everything is an amazing mix of the personalities that Trixie owns, a true treat for a Trixie fan!
