What’s going on here?! Thrasher’s latest release is a unique mishmash of many genres, combining numerous metal subgenres with trap and EDM elements. Atmospheric guitars, trap beats, blast beats and low-tuned guitar riffs galore here, and even without vocals to help carry it, the song blends these elements together in such a brutal way that it annihilates everything in its path. You won’t regret listening to this if you love your metal unique.

[Equinity] The Empty Tomb – INSECT | Complextro
Welcome to Round 2 of Queen Chrysalis on Equinity 04: Immersion, only this time, she is much colder and calculating (does the thumbnail art say no more?) but still just as arrogant! Insecta Regno was only half of this tale, a tale about how much we like the crazy bug queen. This song by The Empty Tomb, Oh…boy, those vocal chops bring a chill to your spine with this dead serious build-up behind those vocal chops. This trance-like melody with such a malicious undertone really sells it as you hear Chrissy speak and unleash that laugh. The song then only has one last thing to do–unleash the Minions! The drops and beats perfectly sound off on the changeling drones doing Chrissy’s bidding. You wonder how she lost in the season 6 finale in the first place! Man, the air raid siren in the background, along with the sounds of her insidious plan coming to fruition. What a great track about just how vile Queen Chrysalis really is. As always, this Qilin asks you to judge for yourself.

Japkozjad – Rainbow Badass Dash | Trap
A laid-back Trap song fitting to the cool and focused Dashie when preparing for a big race (and knowing that she will win!) There’s some cute vibes in the music too and it does reflect Dashie’s caring side toward her friends as well!
Nyancat380 – New Beginnings EP | Electronic
Nyancat380 has released an album just before the new year showcasing seven of their unreleased songs as a Christmas gift to us. Its quite an interesting little excerpt and each track has a distinct element.

7th Stive – Frames | Bass House
Every now and then there’s a song that catches you off guard with how good it is! It should be no surprise that 7th Stive can turn out a hot, dirty mix like Frames given how hot their tracks have been this year!
Frames is the first song off their amazing new album of the same name (which you should definitely check out and buy!) The track starts off with an unassuming lead, syncopated excellently to lead into the beat. The bass on this track is fantastic – making it impossible not to nod your head along. Add in some extra sound effects and professional sound design and you’ve got an amazing door into an even more amazing album!

Nothing can stop the return of the evil King Sombra. This track fits his aura really well, painting a picture of his second attempt at destroying the Crystal Empire with a vengeance. The drop is heavy as can be, and those orchestral trap moments really capture Sombra’s dark side. Two different styles of music coming together like this is a blessing!
Toby Macarony – Accursed Magic | Alternate Electronic
Welcome to the party! Don’t worry–I’m sure that Pinkie’s friends were already like that when she found them. Finally, someone has addressed the need for more “dark western trap” (frankly a criminally underrepresented genre)! What’s great about this track (apart from being perfect for making your friends and family worry about your music listening habits) is how it takes elements found elsewhere on the “Shenanigans Two” album and twists them to serve its unsettling narrative. Choirs, synths, and distortion used to evoke wonder or adventure on other tracks create a foreboding atmosphere. The guitar that was a hero on “Chiptune Train” plays its last, tortured notes before never being heard from again. The grooving bass line, introduced after the instrumental opening, pairs with dark chimes to create a twisted music box melody. When joined by the guitar and ominous harmonica, it creates an amazing effect, completing Toby Macarony’s latest masterful layering of unlikely accompanying elements. The song jangles, rattles, and scratches its way to its dark conclusion as the light fades along with your hopes of escaping a terrible fate. All of this works amazingly well with the video, which in turn burns, wavers, and pulses to the music to great effect. To borrow from another Toby Macarony album title, this is grim, dark, and groovy stuff.
